The Story Behind Little Dancer
Edgar Degas revealed Little Dancer in 1881 at the Paris Impressionist Exhibition. However, he shocked viewers with his honest, lifelike representation. Instead of using marble, Degas chose beeswax and real materials to highlight the everyday girl behind the art.

Many people criticized the work. They had expected idealized female figures, not a slouched dancer from working-class Paris. Because of this backlash, Degas removed the sculpture from public display.

Years later, financier Paul Mellon acquired the original wax version. In 1985, he donated it to the National Gallery of Art, where it still inspires visitors today.
